We want to share an important update regarding recent developments in Ireland's solar energy landscape that could impact our collective efforts towards a sustainable future.
SEAI released its Retrofit Quarterly Report, for Q1 2024, detailing adjustments made to grants for various energy efficiency measures, including solar PV installations. These reductions come at a pivotal moment as Ireland works towards its renewable energy targets outlined in the Climate Action Plan.
In Q1 2024, solar PV grants continue to be the SEAI’s most popular demand led programme. For domestic rooftop solar, the SEAI notes that reductions in grant supports let to a spike in demand in December 2023 and resulted in applications increasing by only 3% year on year in 2024. This is down from 32% from the same period last year, showing that the reduction in grants for solar PV installations is significant, potentially affecting our progress towards achieving the ambitious goal of 8GW of solar energy capacity by 2030.
As we know, Solar plays a crucial role in diversifying Ireland's energy mix, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing energy security. However, grant reductions pose a challenge to widespread adoption, potentially slowing our transition to a sustainable future.
We encourage our members and supporters to stay informed about these developments and advocate for policies that support the growth of solar energy in Ireland. Collaboration across sectors is essential as we work together to overcome barriers and accelerate progress towards our renewable energy targets.
Together, let's continue to champion the growth of solar energy in Ireland and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
